Windows 8 makes it harder for techs to troubleshoot problems. Try switching to a PS2 style or use an adapter and see if one of the Function keys(F8) gets you into the safe mode. Thanks for sharing! The F8 key brings up the boot menu (i.e. The f8 key does work it just brings up the boot menu not the startup menu (boot from floppy, ide etc.).
